Content

The consolidated statutes and regulations and the annual statutes from Ontario are updated weekly by CanLII, from the e-Laws website, maintained by the Government of Ontario.

Consolidated Statutes

The consolidated statutes database started on January 1, 2004 and contains point-in-time versions of the Revised Statutes of Ontario, 1990 (RSO 1990) as well as several chapters of the annual Statutes of Ontario (SO). These versions are "in force versions", that is, versions of the text as it was legally binding during a certain period of time.

CanLII cites these statutes as follows:

Consolidated Regulations

The consolidated regulations database started on January 1, 2004 and contains point-in-time versions of the Revised Regulations of Ontario, 1990 (RRO 1990) as well as Ontario Regulations (O Reg) enabled by a consolidated statute. Theses versions are " in force versions", that is, versions of the text as it was legally binding during a certain period of time.

CanLII cites these regulations as follows:

  • by the chapter number of the RRO 1990, as for example: Garage Licences, RRO 1990, Reg 595; or
  • by the annual regulation number of the O Reg, as for example: Pit Bull Controls, O Reg 157/05.

Annual Statutes

The annual statutes database brings together the assented statutes once enacted by the Legislative Assembly of Ontario since April 12, 2000. They include new Acts as well as Acts that amend existing consolidated Acts.

CanLII refers to annual statutes by their Statutes of Ontario (SO) chapter number, as for example:

Historical Versions on the e-Laws Website

The point-in-time "in force versions" provided on CanLII do not exactly correspond to the "historical versions" posted on the e-laws website. On the e-laws website, a new version is created each time an amendment is made to a consolidated text, but also when this amendment comes into force. Moreover, for regulations, a new version is created when a first French translation is added (see the term Historical version on the e-laws site's definitions). On CanLII, an "in force version" is created only when an amendment comes into force.

Official Versions on the e-Laws Website

Effective November 30 2008, a copy in HTML or Microsoft Word format of a legislative text accessed from the e-Laws website is official. See Official Copy of Law from e-Laws Website, O Reg 413/08. Copies of legislative texts published on CanLII do not have official value.
